DETROIT -- Wayne State University redshirt freshman pitcher
Lyndsay Butler tossed a two-hit gem and
Logan White and
Emily Bryce each hit home runs Saturday to lead the Warriors past Grand Valley State University 3-0 in an NCAA Midwest Regional Tournament game played at the WSU Softball Fields.
Wayne State (43-9 overall) earned its 18th straight victory of the season and advanced to Sunday's NCAA regional championship round. WSU will play at 12 p.m. against an opponent yet to be determined. GVSU (30-13) will face the winner of the University of Indianapolis and Ashland University at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Grand Valley State had a single in each of the first two innings off Butler, but couldn't advance the runner past second base in either frame.
Wayne State generated its first two runs off the long ball with two outs in the bottom of the third inning. After freshman
Emily Cava (Brampton, Ont. / Cardinal Leger S.S.) doubled with two outs, senior
Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) hit just the second home run of her career on a 2-0 pitch from GVSU's Lauren Gevaart. The line drive over the centerfield fence gave Wayne State an early 2-0 lead over the Lakers.
WSU, which had hit just nine home runs all season entering Saturday's game, went deep again in the bottom of the fourth inning, this time off the bat of junior catcher
Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams). Bryce, who also had just one career homer entering the contest, lifted a 1-0 offering from Gevaart over the left field wall to lead off the inning. Bryce's home run gave Wayne State a 3-0 lead after four innings.
It was more than enough for Butler, who retired the final 18 Lakers in order. She didn't allow a baserunner from the second inning on to improve to 22-4 on the season. The GLIAC Pitcher of the Year finished the game with three strikeouts and no walks in seven innings and threw just 69 pitches overall. GVSU's Lauren Gevaart also threw just 69 pitches as the game was finished in just over one hour.
Wayne State had five hits total in the game -- three of them extra-base hits. Senior
Julie Ingratta (Markham, Ont. / St. Thomas of Villanova College) and sophomore
Gabby Williams (South Lyon, Mich. / South Lyon) each had singles for the Warriors.
The Warriors improved to 21-38 all-time in the NCAA Tournament under head coach
Gary Bryce. Wayne State has earned its first two victories in the NCAA tournament since 2010.
NOTES:Â
Emily Bryce's only other homer in a Warrior uniform came in 2013, while White hadn't homered in a game since her only other round-tripper during the 2012 season ... Butler recorded her 13th shutout of the season ... Wayne State earned its second shutout in as many days and earned its 25th shutout of the season in just 52 games.
