Ferris State's Paige Kortz Breaks School Season Home Run Record As Weather Impacts Games At Northwood

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team had its scheduled Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) doubleheader at Northwood on Tuesday (April 26) impacted by weather conditions, but still managed to have an individual break a school record.

The host Timberwolves earned a 4-3 win over FSU in the opener as the game was halted in the sixth inning. The second game was subsequently called off due to the conditions.

Senior centerfielder Paige Kortz tallied two hits for the Bulldogs in the lone played game and knocked in a run on a solo homer to right center in the third inning. The home run was her 11th of the year and topped the school single-season record of 10 homers previously held by Jody Gifford and set back in 1998. The home run was her third in her last three contests.

In the game, Northwood took a 1-0 lead in the first, but Ferris State tied it back up in the top of the third on Kortz's home run. The Timberwolves answered with three runs in the bottom of the third for a 4-1 lead, but FSU came back to score twice in the fourth to cut the margin to once before play was eventually stopped. Both teams had four hits.

Along with the two hits from Kortz, FSU also got hits from fellow outfielders Kylie Winkels and Abby Mitchell. Winkels doubled while Mitchell and Amara Zukowski both added RBI's.

Freshman Kristina Baar threw two and one-third innings of action for the Bulldogs and allowed four runs on one hit with four strikeouts and five walks. FSU's Kristie Gray pitched three scoreless innings, allowing three hits with two K's and a walk.

The Bulldogs will wrap up league regular-season play with a six-game homestand starting on Friday (April 29) when FSU hosts Wayne State beginning at 2:30 p.m. (ET) for game one with game two slated for approximately 4:30 p.m. (ET) at the FSU Softball Field.
