Women's Basketball Defeated by Ferris State in a GLIAC Road Game

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team fell to the Ferris State Bulldogs by a final score of 90-38 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) game at the Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. on Thursday, Jan. 20. 

Junior guard Carson Nitz gave the Lakers the game's first lead when she scored on a jump shot to put the team ahead 2-0. The Bulldogs added the game's next three field goals to take a 6-2 lead over the Lakers. Junior forward Mattison Rayman added her first point of the contest at 7:26 of the first quarter when she made a free throw to bring the Lakers within three points of the Bulldogs (6-3).

Ferris State would build a double-digit lead over the Lakers in the next stretch of the first quarter, scoring 10 of the game's next 12 points. With 3:44 left in the first quarter, the Bulldogs led by 14 points (21-7). 

Freshman guard CeCe Hacker made a jump shot and added two free throws for the Lakers in the final two minutes of the first quarter but the Bulldogs held a 29-13 lead after the first ten minutes of play. 

Rayman scored a pair of free throw attempts to open the second quarter's scoring. The Laker forward would add two layups later in the quarter but the team could not stop the Bulldogs offense as the home squad led 39-19 with 5:14 left in the first half. At the end of the second half, Ferris State led by 27 points (53-26). 

Ferris State continued to control the game in the second half as the team outscored the Lakers by a 37-12 margin to secure the victory by a final score of 90-38. 

Breaking Down the Game: Rayman led the Lakers in the game with 13 points as she went five-for-nine in field goals. The junior forward also led the team in rebounds as she recorded nine boards, which included seven defensive rebounds. Makenzie Bray ranked second on the team as the other double-digit point scorer for the Lakers as she totaled 12 points. Hacker led the Lakers with four assists against the Bulldogs. 

The Lakers finished the game with a 36.6 shooting percentage, going 15-for-41 in the game. On the other end of the floor, the Bulldogs went 35-for-68 in the game to total a 51.5 shooting percentage. Ferris State outrebounded Lake State, 37-26, in the game.

The Lakers will return home to take on the Northwood Timberwolves in a conference game on Saturday, Jan. 22 at the Bud Cooper Gymnasium in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Tip off is set for 1:00 p.m.
