RECAP: The Northwood softball team won two more today against Cal U. (Pa,) and Wheeling (March 10). Performances by Emily Mankel and Shayna Frank aided the Timberwolves in completing the two-game sweep. Shayna Frank eclipsed the 400 career strikeouts mark.

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS – Cal U. (PA.)

  • Shayna Frank dominated, tossing her second complete-game shutout of the day. Frank totaled 13 strikeouts to hold the Vulcans at bay.
  • Frank became the fourth player in Northwood history to eclipse the 400 career strikeouts barrier tonight and now sits at 409 career strikeouts.
  • The game was a pitcher's duel that neither would budge. Even when the Vulcans had the bases loaded, Frank stood tall and got a big strikeout in the sixth.
  • An error with two out in the seventh advanced Brittany Steimel to second. Gabby Shloop then pinch ran, and Emily Mankel came up clutch with a single up the middle that walked it off against the Vulcans.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS – Wheeling

  • Northwood saw first career home runs for both Emily Mankel and Brittany Steimel.
  • Haley frank got the scoring started in the first inning with a single to the pitcher that scored Ginna Fantin from third.
  • The Timberwolves were able to turn Wheeling's threat away with a play at the plate that Madelin Skene threw to Fantin.
  • Following her walk-off single in the first game vs. Cal U. (Pa.), Emily Mankel began the third inning with a bang. Her solo shot to center pushed the lead to 2-0.
  • Wheeling would get a run in the next half inning to make it 2-1.
  • In back-to-back innings Mankel made her presence felt, a two-run bomb to center that scored Delanie Grundman would be her second of the game. And make it 4-1.
  • Brittany "Nuke" Steimel's bat had some pop as well tonight as she also hammered one to centerfield for a two-run shot in the top of the seventh. This put an exclamation point on the game and put the Timberwolves out in front 6-1 for good.
  • Haley Leister also had another solid outing tossing a complete game, striking out nine, and only allowing four hits.
