Kissimmee, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (2-7 overall) rallied from an early 1-0 deficit and held on for a
4-3 in-region game triumph over Wisconsin-Parkside (2-7 overall) on Sunday.
After the Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on three singles, the Warriors answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Freshman left fielder
Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) and junior shortstop
Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) led off the frame with back-to-back bunt singles. Junior right fielder
Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. White scored on a passed ball with Histed crossing the plate on an errant throw by the catcher to home plate. Allen tallied an unearned run as junior first baseman
Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) reached on a throwing error by the UWP shortstop.
The Rangers cut WSU's lead to 3-2 with two singles and a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth.
Wayne State responded in the bottom of the inning as senior designated player
Rachel Spaccarotelli (Ray, Mich. / Romeo) had a leadoff double to right center. Pinch-runner
Amanda Burnard (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman second baseman
Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.). White drove in Burnard with a sacrifice fly to left center.
In the top of the seventh, UWP had a leadoff triple and an RBI double to make it a 4-3 contest. After a ground out moved the runner to third, pinch-hitter Colleen Cummings fly ball to shallow right field was caught by Allen who made a strong throw to home with catcher
Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) making a snap throw to third to double off the runner and end the game.
Junior pitcher
Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) went the distance to earn her first victory of the season. She struck out four and walked two while allowing three earned runs on eight hits.
Kirsten Luevano pitched for UWP and recorded one strikeout and two walks while allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits.
Sophomore center fielder
Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) was the lone Warrior with a multiple-hit game.
