Men's Hoops Loses 78-72 Battle With Hillsdale

Wayne State's losing streak reaches five games

DETROIT - In a tight game which saw 14 lead changes and 20 ties, the Wayne State University men's basketball team (8-6, 5-3 GLIAC) came out on the short end of a 78-72 result against Hillsdale College (14-1, 8-0 GLIAC) on Thursday night at the Matthaei.

The Warriors shot 58 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, but just 36 percent in the second half as their losing streak reached five games.  The Chargers, meanwhile, won their 10th in a row and swept the season series with WSU.

Ike Udanoh (Detroit, Mich./Warren Woods Tower) led three Warriors in double figures with 24 points while totaling a game-high nine rebounds.  He finished 8-for-12 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free throw line.

Ian Larkin (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance), who tallied 18 points and six rebounds in the game, and Udanoh had 13 points apiece in the first half, during which the largest margin of separation between the two sides was five points.  A triple by Larkin gave WSU a 27-22 lead with 6:12 to go until halftime.  The Chargers scored 15 of the next 24 points, however, to take a 37-36 advantage into the locker room.

A three-pointer by Stacey Waters (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) gave Wayne State its last lead of the contest, 63-60, with 5:20 remaining.  Shortly after a 9-0 Charger run, a pair of free throws from Bryan Coleman (Southfield, Mich./Lathrup) with a minute left put the Warriors down by two, 71-69.

On the next possession, Brad Guinane, who led Hillsdale with 21 points, sealed it on a three-pointer with 35 seconds to go.

Earning his first double-double as a Warrior, Cole Prophet (Sandusky, Ohio) finished with 11 points and 10 assists.  He and three of his fellow starters played 36 minutes or more, as WSU had only seven available players due to injuries.

Wayne State will host Findlay on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. ET.
