Ferris State Tennis Squads Take On National Power Saint Leo In Florida Action

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis teams battled hard on Tuesday (March 7), but fell short against a pair of national highly-ranked Saint Leo (Fla.) squads in Florida during FSU's annual spring break trip.

The Bulldog men, ranked 23rd nationally, fell to the Lions by a 5-2 count in a highly-competitive match while the women suffered a 5-0 setback.

Both Saint Leo teams were ranked third among the nation's top 25 squads in the most recent national listing with the men expected to move up to first and the women second when the next national rankings are announced this week. Saint Leo recently captured the 2023 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Championship on the men's side while the women were the national runner-up.

The two Saint Leo teams are guided by Ferris State alum and former Bulldog head coach Chad Berryhill.

"Our men came out of the gates ready for the battle and played amazing doubles today," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "Overall, there was some great tennis played this afternoon."

The match was the first of the week in Florida for the Bulldog men, who fell to 6-2 overall this year with both setbacks against teams ranked in the top 10 nationally. FSU is now 6-5 overall on the women's side and midst a stretch in which the squad faces four teams ranked among the top 30 in the country in Florida this week.

Both Ferris State teams will return to the court on Wednesday (March 8) against another Florida power in Rollins (Fla.) with the women's contest beginning at 3 p.m. (ET) and the men's contest slated for a 6:30 p.m. (ET) start.
