Softball Upends #14-Augustana 8-1

Omelanchuk goes 4-for-4 with three RBI.

Kissimmee, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (10-10 overall) concluded its 2011 Rebel Spring Games play with a convincing 8-1 triumph over #14-Augustana (13-2 overall) Saturday afternoon.  The Warriors won nine of their final 12 games in Florida.

After allowing an unearned run in the top of the first, WSU responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning.  Junior first baseman Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) had a two-out single to right center to extend her hitting streak to five games.  Sophomore catcher Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) followed with a two-run blast to center field.

The Warrior bats exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third.  Junior right fielder Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) led off with a double to right center and scored as junior third baseman Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) followed with an RBI double.  A single by Ryan put runners on the corners with Stanley scoring on an RBI single by Omelanchuk.  After an out, senior designated player Rachel Spaccarotelli (Ray, Mich. / Romeo) walloped a double to left center plating Ryan and Omelanchuk.  Pinch-runner Makelle Barski (Trenton, Mich. ) moved to third on a single by freshman second baseman Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.).  Following a ground out, junior third baseman #Lauren Histed# (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) had a two-run single to right field.

Neither team scored over the final four innings.

WSU junior pitcher Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) limited the Vikings to two hits, while striking out three to improve to 4-7.

Ashley Meyer (5-1) started in the circle for Augustana and surrendered seven earned runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings with two strikeouts and one walk.

Eight different Warriors had hits in the contest with Omelanchuk equaling the WSU single-game record with four hits.  Ryan was the only other WSU batter with a multiple-hit game.

Wayne State has won five of its last six games vs. Augustana, but still trails 6-7 in the all-time series.

The Warriors return home to begin conference play this Friday.  Wayne State will have six home league contests in a 48-hour span with doubleheaders on Friday (3:30 p.m. vs. Saginaw Valley), Saturday (1 p.m. vs. Northwood) and Sunday (noon vs. Lake Superior).
