Cardinal men drop close battle to Eagles 58-57

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team rallied from a 10-point half-time deficit to lead Ashland University late in the second game of a weekend series at the James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.

After the Cardinals moved in front, the Eagles fought back and escaped late with a 58-57 win to earn the sweep. The loss drops SVSU to 1-5 overall and 1-5 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Two made free throws from Delano Smith put SVSU up 52-50 with under three minutes to play, but the Eagles scored the next four and the Cardinals were unable to even the score the rest of the way.

Myles Belyeu led the Cardinals with 20 points on 7-of-18 shooting. Darnell Hoskins Jr. and Delano Smith each added 10 points, while Tyrik Singh finished with nine points and 10 rebounds.

SVSU shot 18-of-54 from the field, 6-of-25 from deep and 15-of-26 from the line. The Cardinals finished with nine assists, five steals, 35 rebounds and eight turnovers.

Aaron Thompson, the game-one hero for Ashland, finished with 14 points and nine rebounds for the Eagles.

The Cardinals play a rare midweek contest against rival Northwood University at 5 pm Tuesday at the James O'Neill Jr. Arena.
