Ferris State Soccer Earns Home Field Victory To Cap Opening Weekend Of Action

Big Rapids, Mich. – The nationally 12th-ranked Ferris State University women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 victory over the Quincy Hawks for their first win of the 2019 campaign on Sunday (Sept. 8) at the Bulldog Soccer Field in non-conference action.

The contest featured Ferris State's second consecutive shutout as the Bulldogs and senior goalkeeper Alison Chesterfield again held an opponent scoreless. Ferris State has not yet allowed a goal this season.

Ferris State had a large advantage in shots attempted at 22-4 and shots on goal by a 10-1 count. Quincy was held without a shot on goal until less than seven minutes remained in regulation. Chesterfield made her only save of the day on Quincy's shot.

Despite a few early chances and a 6-0 shots on goal advantage, the Bulldogs were held off the board in the opening half. Early in the second half, Ferris State cashed in for their first goal of the season.

It came at 51:17 of the match when sophomore Pia Nagel got on the end of a ball from junior Mackenzie Dawes, and alone against the keeper. Nagel punched in her first goal of the season. Dawes also earned her first assist of the year on the goal.

The goal, which stood as the game-winner, is Nagel's eighth career game-winning goal. The game-winning tally moved her past Bri Borgman and Nichole Boehnke into a tie for third all-time in program history in game-winning goals with Lisa O'Brian.

Chesterfield registered the win in goal by making one stop and moved to 1-0-1 with two shutouts in Ferris State's first two games. Emilee Autry took the loss in goal for Quincy, making 10 saves in the effort.

Ferris State next heads west to North Dakota where the Bulldogs will take on Minot State Friday (Sept 13) at 8 p.m. (ET) in non-conference action.
