Ferris State Earns Second Consecutive Home Win By Beating Hillsdale

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's tennis squad earned its second consecutive home win of the weekend as the Bulldogs beat Hillsdale 5-2 on Sunday (Feb. 20) in regional competition at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center.

The Bulldogs, now 3-2 overall, claimed the victory over the Chargers in convincing fashion, joining the men's team in a sweep over Hillsdale.

"It was a great day for Bulldog tennis and both teams played outstanding," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "Our women got back on track in winning the doubles point and carried that momentum into singles.

"A special shout out also goes to senior Brittany Lavenant on a hard-fought victory at four singles," he added. "It was one of those matches where the strongest mental game and the most patience was going to prevail."

Lavenant claimed a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win at the fourth position in the lineup to help FSU earn the victory. The Bulldogs also got a 6-1, 6-2 win from Sophie Daavettila at one singles along with a 6-3, 6-4 decision from Agata Klak at the number two spot. In addition, Patricia Martin Gomez registered an important triumph at the fifth singles flight by a 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 count.

In doubles play, the Bulldogs started the day strong with wins at the first and third flights in the lineup to claim the initial point before taking four of the six singles positions.

Ferris State will next be in action on March 8 when FSU opens its annual spring trip to Florida against Winona State (MInn.) at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
