Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's tennis squad opened its annual spring break trip to Florida, falling to the University of Tampa, ranked 16th nationally, by a 6-1 score on Monday (March 6) afternoon at the Naimoli & Young Tennis Complex.

The host Spartans claimed the doubles point with wins at the top two flights in the lineup before coming back to notch five of the six singles positions.

The Ferris State duo of Sophie Daavettila and Amelia Laverdiere earned a 6-3 victory at three doubles for the Bulldogs while Morgan Waller was a 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 winner at two singles.

The Bulldogs fell to 6-3 overall with the road setback.

Overall, Ferris State will play a total of four matches in the Sunshine State this week with all four contests against teams ranked among the top 30 in the nation.

The Bulldogs are back on the court Tuesday (March 7) with a non-league contest against nationally third-ranked Saint Leo (Fla.) at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Training Center. Saint Leo is guided by FSU alum and former Bulldog head coach Chad Berryhill, who led his squad to the runner-up finish recently at the 2023 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Indoor Championships.
