Volleyball Falls in Road Match to the Davenport Panthers

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State volleyball team dropped a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match to the Davenport Panthers on Saturday, Oct. 23 by a final score of 3-0. With the loss, the Lakers drop to 2-7 in conference competition this season after losing the match by scores of 25-14, 25-14 and 25-17. 

The Lakers and Panthers opened the first set evenly matched up as the teams were tied at seven. The Lakers took an 8-7 lead over Davenport when Halle Grulke recorded a kill. However, the Panthers responded by scoring seven of the next eight points to build a 14-9 lead. The Lakers came back within three points of the home team (17-14) but the Panthers would take the set by scoring the final eight points. 

In the second set, the teams started out evenly matched again as the Panthers led by one point through the first 13 points (7-6). Davenport began to extend the lead through the middle stages of the set, eventually going up 20-12. The Panthers won the second set by a score of 25-14 after scoring five of the set's final six points. 

The Panthers came out strong to open the third set, taking a 7-3 lead over the Lakers through the first 10 points. Lake State closed the gap to four points (17-13) but Davenport finished the set strong to seal the match win by a score of 25-17. 

Stat Leaders: Senior Camdyn Odykrik led the Lakers with seven kills in the match. Junior Taylor Fleming ranked second on the team with six kills while Ally Gruber and Bethany Wilson tied for third on the team in kills with five. Wilson's .231 hitting percentage led the Lakers against Davenport. 

The Lakers finished the match with 24 assists with Halle Grulke (11) and Emily Kalinowski (8) recording the majority of the assists in the game. 

Defensively, the Lakers were led by their libero Hagelthorn who posted a team-leading 15 digs in the match.

The Lakers will continue their three-match weekend on the road tomorrow afternoon as the team takes on the Davenport Panthers at 2:00 p.m. The match is set to take place at the Davenport Student Center in Grand Rapids, Mich.
