Men's Hoops Drop Second Straight Overtime Game

Gavin Toma knocked down two free throws with three seconds remaining to force the extra session.

DETROIT -- With its sights set on snapping a five-game losing streak, the Wayne State University men's basketball team (2-11, 2-8 GLIAC) hosted Ohio Dominican (5-10, 3-7 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon inside the Matthaei. The Warriors dropped their second straight overtime game, 70-64. The game featured five ties and seven lead changes while neither team led by more than nine.

WSU led for the majority of the contest until the final three minutes of regulation.

ODU opened up an early 9-4 lead after a triple from Shemar Waugh with 15:19 remaining in the first half. Tristan Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) capped a 12-0 Warrior run to put WSU ahead 16-9 with 11:18 to play in the first half. Two free throws from Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) kept the home team in the lead at 22-16 with 8:14 to play.

The Panthers cut the deficit to one, 22-21, at the 6:20 mark. That would be as close as ODU would come before intermission as WSU went to the locker room leading 34-29 after a three-pointer from Gavin Toma (Troy, Mich. / Southfield Christian) as time expired.

Toma and Moore led WSU as each scored eight first-half points. The Warriors held the Panthers to 39 percent (11-of-28) shooting in the opening stanza.

Michael Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) and Toma teamed up for back-to-back layups to begin the second half, putting the Warriors up 38-32.

A five-point possession by Ohio Dominican brought the Panthers within one, 42-41, with 13:22 left to play. Toma continued to have the hot hand and kept WSU ahead 46-42 with a layup.

Chad Nelson connected from behind the arc to again bring ODU within one, 46-45. After the Panthers tied the game at 47-47, Chuck Key (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech) answered with a bucket at the 8:46 mark but missed the chance for a three-point play. DeMarius Miller (Bolingbrook, Ill. / Romeoville) gave the Warriors a 51-47 lead after a fast-break layup with 8:29 remaining. Another bucket from Miller gave WSU a six-point advantage with just under six minutes to play.

Ronnie Williams hit a three-pointer and Waugh followed with a layup to give ODU a 54-53 lead with 2:43 to play. It was the Panthers first lead since the 15-minute mark of the first half. Toma hit both of his free throws to put the Green & Gold back on top, 55-54, with 2:15 on the clock.

The back-and-forth contest continued as the Panthers regained the lead after a Mike DeLeon layup at the 1:43 mark.

With 29 seconds remaining, head coach David Greer took a timeout. Moore followed with the go-ahead jumper to give WSU a 57-56 lead with 17 seconds left to play. However, with 11 seconds left Waugh answered with a conventional three-point play to put ODU on top, 59-57.

Two free throws from Toma in a one-and-one situation with 2.6 second left tied the game at 59-59 and a desperation half-court heave from Clark Bishop (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance), after he stole the in-bounds pass, went off the rim to send the game into overtime. For the second straight contest Toma forced overtime with the game-tying points.

Weaver scored the first four points of the extra session for the visitors to put ODU on top 63-60 with 3:14 left to play. Two missed free throws and cold shooting plagued WSU in overtime. Weaver added two more points to give the Panthers a 67-61 lead with 30 seconds remaining. A late three-pointer from Toma was too little too late as the Panthers controlled the overtime period. WSU went 1-of-7 from the floor in OT and 2-of-4 from the charity stripe.

Toma led all scorers with 21 points, while Moore finished with 12 points. Nelson led four Panthers in double figures with 17 points while Weaver posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

WSU will play its next three games on the road beginning with a match-up at Lake Erie on Thursday at 7:30 PM.
