Softball Drops Two on 2nd Day of Charger Chillout

Warriors edged 3-2 by NKU, blanked 13-0 by UIndy

Decatur, Ala. -- The Wayne State University softball team dropped a pair of in-region contests on Saturday falling 3-2 to Northern Kentucky University (3-0) and 13-0 to the University of Indianapolis (4-0).

The Norse scored once in the bottom of the first on a leadoff single and a two-out double by Emily Schwaeble.

NKU increased its lead to 3-0 with a two-run second inning.  A single, a hit by pitch and a sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position.  Allie Conner hit an 0-2 offering into centerfield for a two-run single.

WSU starting pitcher Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) settled down scattering six hits over the next innings and holding Northern Kentucky scoreless.  Cain finished the contest with one strikeout and no walks.

Freshman Shelby Spano (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) had a two-out single in the top of the fourth and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Classmate Shannon Hilton (Gilford, Ont. / Bradford) followed with an RBI single to right.

In the top of the sixth, senior right fielder Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) worked a leadoff walk against Schwaeble.  Pinch-runner Catherine Rayos (Warren, Mich. / Mott/Macomb Mathematics Science Technology Center) moved to second on a ground out, and then to third on a wild pitch.  With two outs, Spano doubled to left scoring Rayos, but reliever Alex Caudill was able to get the final out of the frame.

Senior Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) had a one-out walk in the top of the seventh, and sophomore Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) was able to earn a walk on the 13th pitch of her at bat after fouling off seven two-strike pitches.  An infield single by sophomore Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) loaded the bases for Allen, who hit a 3-1 offering directly to the shortstop who threw Histed out at the plate on a force play.  A groundout ended the Warriors comeback attempt.

WSU managed just five hits in the contest but worked Norse pitchers for five walks. Spano was the lone Warrior with a multiple-hit affair, while Fulton walked three times and Histed reached twice on a single and a walk.
