Women's Tennis Defeats Walsh, 7-0

The Warriors blank their opponent for a second consecutive match.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (2-0 overall) finished the first weekend of regular season play by handling visiting Walsh (2-1 overall) by a 7-0 score on Sunday afternoon inside the Duchene Athletic Facility.

DOUBLES
The Warriors jumped ahead early and grabbed the doubles point, winning all three matches in the process. 

First to finish were the pairing of freshmen Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Shanice Weekes (London, England), who dispatched of their opponents by a score of 6-1 on court No. 3.

The duo at court No. 1 were next, as junior athletes Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) won their doubles match by a score of 6-2 over Walsh's Carla Padberg and Alexa Gamborino.

Not to be outdone, redshirt freshman Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) and freshman Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) also claimed victory in their match, a 6-3 decision.

SINGLES
Wayne State then swept all six matches in singles action to complete the victory. 

At No. 4, Gorgidze defeated Gamborino, 6-1, 6-1.

Ruyssen, once again playing at No. 1 singles, grabbed another victory. She won against the Cavaliers' Risako Umekuni, 6-3, 6-0. 

Komar defeated Padberg at the No. 2 spot, 6-0, 6-4. 

Arafat and her opponent, Walsh's Shantala Uzcategui, had a competitive battle in the first set with the Warrior student-athlete coming out on top by a 7-5 score. Arafat then made quick work of the second set, winning that one 6-1 to grab the point at the No. 3 spot. 

Weekes completed a perfect singles match on her end, as the freshman won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. 

Finally, Szpakowska completed a sweep of the afternoon for the Warriors, winning her match at the No. 5 spot by a score of 6-2, 6-2.

"Today was another great win for the team. We've been working hard at practice and it's refreshing to finally be back playing matches after a long off-season. We're excited to keep moving forward and continue performing better with each match," said senior Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich.)

UP NEXT
The Warriors will next be on the court on Saturday, February 11, against Northwestern Ohio at the Duchene Athletic Facility. The match is slated for a noon start.
