Women's Basketball Stumbles Late at Ashland, Falls 83-68

Miller leads WSU with 14 points.

ASHLAND, OHIO -- Playing without two starters, the Wayne State University women's basketball team (4-3 Overall, 4-3 GLIAC) lost 83-68 on Tuesday afternoon at Ashland (4-3 Overall, 4-3 GLIAC).

FIRST HALF RECAP
The host Eagles scored the first six points before WSU's Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) hit back-to-back triples both off an assist from Anna Ruhstorfer (Grand Blanc, Mich/ Flint Powers Catholic).

Wayne State trailed for much of the opening quarter and ended the period behind 24-22.

In the second quarter, WSU kept pace with Ashland scoring on a Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich/ North Farmington) lay-up to tie the game 24-24.  It was the first of four ties in the stanza.

The rest of the second period was mostly the Eagles scoring, but the Warriors knotted the game at 39-39 after 20 minutes on a jumper by Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.).

SECOND HALF RECAP
Wayne State started off the third period with a layup from Kara Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich./ Huron) to take a 41-39 lead.
 
The Warriors would take a three-point advantage (45-42) with 6:41 left in the third on a lay-up by Miller.  But the lead did not last long as Ashland would score the next four points.

WSU ended the third quarter down by two, 60-58.

Wayne State kept up the pace in the fourth period and started off with a three pointer from Jolee Houle (Zeeland, Mich/ Grand Haven) off an assist from Cherney to take the lead at 61-60.

Cherney scored off a feed from Houle and WSU led 63-60.

The lead would not last long for the Warriors as AU found a groove and scored the next 14 points to lead 74-63.

The Warriors fell 83-68 at Ashland.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Miller led with a team-high 14 points and four assists.  Cherney chipped in with 12 points, and a game-high 12 rebounds.  Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) helped with 11 points, while Houle and Wilson both scored 10 points.  Houle had scored just 10 points total on the season prior to the contest.

LEADING THE EAGLES
Annie Roshak had a game-high 22 points and six steals. Hallie Heideman chipped in with 20 points and a game-high five assists. 

TEAM STATS
The Warriors went 40% (27-of-68) from field goal range and 33% (10-of-30) from three-point range.  AU shot 44% (28-of-63) from the field and 48% (10-of-21) from beyond the arc.  WSU led in blocks 4-3, but Ashland held a 26-10 advantage in points off turnovers as Wayne State had 24 turnovers to 12 miscues by the Eagles.

Wayne State will host Grand Valley State on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 2 PM and Sunday, Jan. 31 also at 2 PM.
