Warriors Defeat Blue Knights, 9-1

WSU improves to 2-0 with win over Urbana

SAVANNAH, Ga. - The Wayne State University baseball team improved to 2-0 on the year after a 9-1 victory over Urbana University (3-4) on Tuesday afternoon at the Armstrong Atlantic Invitational.

Alex Trojan (Fenton, Mich./Hartland) paced the Warriors offensively with two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored.  He also had a sacrifice fly and a stolen base as all nine WSU starters reached base at least once.

Josh Wedesky (Fowlerville, Mich.) picked up the win, striking out five and walking three in five innings of work.  He allowed only two hits, both in the fifth inning when the Blue Knights scored their lone run of the game.  Greg Spiess (Saline, Mich.), making his WSU debut, and Justin Sylvester (Macomb, Mich./Dakota) each tossed two scoreless relief innings.

Trojan's sacrifice fly in the first and an RBI single by Josh Schafer (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) in the second gave WSU an early 2-0 advantage.  The Warriors doubled their lead in the third as Trojan scored on a wild pitch and Kasey Koster (Portage, Mich./Central) came in on a double-steal executed with Kyle Vesey (Brighton, Mich.).

Three hits, a pair of walks and a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth aided the Warriors in expanding their lead.  Vesey drove in a run with a single in the frame as WSU made it a 7-1 game.

A.J. Matos (Southgate, Mich./Detroit Western) and Trojan each had a RBI single over the final two innings.
