Ferris State Closes Out Regular-Season With Third-Straight Win To Earn #5 Seed For GLIAC Tourney

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad clinched the number five overall seed for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament as the Bulldogs closed out the regular-season by winning their third-straight road game with a 68-59 triumph at Lake Superior State on Thursday (Feb. 28) night in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Bulldogs will now visit Northern Michigan for the quarterfinal-round of the GLIAC Tournament on Tuesday, March 5, at 6 p.m. (ET) in Marquette.

In Thursday's final regular-season game, the Bulldogs took a four-point lead after the opening period and extended their lead to double-digits in the opening half en route to a five-point edge at the break. FSU held onto the advantage nearly the entire game although the Lakers fought within striking distance to keep it close.

The Bulldogs got a game-high 18 points, six rebounds and five assists from sophomore point guard Shaniya Huggins to go with 16 points and 13 boards by junior center Brayene Benner in a double-double effort. Junior guard Alexis Bush added 12 points with freshman Jalynn Brumfield totaling 11 points in the win.

Ferris State shot 49% overall and went seven-of-11 (63.6%) at the free throw line in addition to one-of-eight (12.5%) at the three-point line.

Meanwhile, the Lakers converted at a 33% clip from the floor and hit eight-of-21 (38%) three's along with 13-of-17 (77%) free throws.

LSSU had five players reach double-figures in the setback and was led by Jenna Gregory's team-high 13 points.

The Bulldogs dominated the glass with a 42-22 margin and came away with nine offensive boards while outscoring the Lakers 46-20 in the paint. FSU also maintained a 22-0 margin in fast break production and outscored LSSU 11-5 in points off turnovers.

With the win, Ferris State improved to 14-12 overall and guaranteed itself a winning season while also improving to 11-9 overall in the GLIAC.

The winner of Tuesday's GLIAC Quarterfinal game will advance to the league semifinals and finals, which will be held at the site of the highest remaining seed following the first round on Saturday and Sunday, March 9-10.
