Softball Evens Record At 5-5 With 7-2 Win over Wheeling Jesuit

Fulton scores three times, reaches base in all four plate appearances.

Kissimmee, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (5-5 overall) began its 2012 spring break trip with a 7-2 triumph over Wheeling Jesuit (6-7 overall) Saturday morning at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla.

With the victory, WSU head coach Gary Bryce moved into 18th place on the NCAA (All Divisions) All-Time Softball Coaching Wins list at 1,012. He passed Sandy Jerstad from Augustana (SD), who retired in 2003 following 27 years with the Vikings.

Bryce is also 12th in most wins at one institution. Two of the 11 coaches ahead of Bryce are Michigan's Carol Hutchins and Central Michigan's Margo Jonker.

The next three coaches in front of Bryce on the all-time wins list are still active -- North Carolina's Donna Papa (1,028 heading into today), Tennessee's Ralph Weekly (1,030 heading into today), and Jonker (1,044 entering today).

The Warriors opened the game at Oren Brown Park by scoring once in the first, three times in the second and sealing the victory with a pair of runs in the third.

Sophomore second baseman Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the first, and after the next two batters were retired, stole second and scored on a double to left center by senior first baseman Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child).

Freshman catcher Emily Bryce (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) led off the next frame with a single to right center. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman outfielder Shannon Hilton (Gilford, Ont. / Bradford) and to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior shortstop Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica), before Fulton delivered an RBI single. Sophomore outfielder Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.) reached on an error and senior third baseman Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ryan smacked a two-run single up the middle increasing WSU's lead to 4-0.

Histed had a two-out single in the third, went to second on a single by Fulton with both runners scoring on White's triple to right center.

The Cardinals scored both of their runs in the top of the fifth on a leadoff single and a two-run home run by Erika Jusko.

The game's final run came in the bottom of the fifth as Hilton walked, advanced to second on a ground out and scored on Fulton's RBI single up the middle.

Senior Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) started in the circle and allowed two earned runs on five hits in 4.1 innings. She struck out one and walked two. Freshman Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) earned her first collegiate save by recording the final eight hits. She struck out two and walked two.

Fulton reached base in all four plate appearances with three singles and a hit by pitch. Ryan went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI, while junior outfielder Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston), and White each had two hits.

Wayne State will play twice on Sunday -- at 9 am vs. Southwest Minnesota State (7-3 after an off day on Saturday) and at 11 am vs. Adelphi (2-1 prior to this afternoon's game vs. CUP).
