Cardinals open weekend with win over Lakers in four

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team headed out on the road for three games in three days, starting at Lake Superior State University Friday in Sault, Ste. Marie, Mich.

After SVSU took the first two sets, 25-20, 25-21, the Lakers responded to get back in the match with a 25-21 win in set three. The Cardinals closed it out with a 25-18 win in set four. The win moves SVSU to 13-8 overall and evens the team's record in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at 5-5.

Rylee Zimmer led the Cardinal offense with 10 kills, adding five block assists. Sarah Veale recorded nine kills, while Olivia Waszak, Madison Thompson, and Haley Clum each finished with seven.

Peyton Gerstacker recorded 34 assists and six kills, while Kelsey Vittitow added a team-high 26 digs. Waszak led the Cardinals at the net on defense with six of SVSU 20 total block assists.

SVSU finished the match with a .150 hitting percentage as a team.

The Cardinals travel to rival Northwood University for a match at 1 pm Saturday in Midland, Mich.
