Warriors fall 50-48 at home to Tiffin

Detroit, Mich. – The Wayne State women's basketball team (3-12, 3-6 GLIAC) dropped a tough decision, 50-48, at home to Tiffin on Thursday night.

Sophomore Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) scored 12 points to go along with five rebounds and junior Felicia Thomas (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central) had 10 points and a career-high 10 boards.

With three seconds left, Deanna Crumpton's (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) game-tying shot neglected to fall and time ran out on the Warriors.

In the end, it was turnovers that proved costly for the Warriors as they finished with 23 for the game.

Moments before Crumpton's near-make, WSU had two chances to take the lead with the game tied at 48 and 35 seconds left on the clock, but back-to-back hiccups set up Mandy Jaeb's game-winning free throws with 22 seconds left.

Ahead 20-15 at the start of the second half, the Warriors were outscored 10-6 in the first four-and-a-half minutes. However, WSU used a 9-0 run over the next 2:38 to take a 35-25 advantage with 12:46 to play. Chelsea Davis (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Salem) tallied four points during the stretch.

The Dragons fired back with a 13-4 run that spanned just under six-and-a-half minutes to trail by one, 39-38 with 6:22 left.

TU eventually tied the game on a triple from Jaeb with 3:44 remaining and both teams went on to trade buckets, setting the stage for the end of the game.

After playing her best game of her career at Findlay on Saturday, Colbert picked up where she left off by tallying the games first six points, giving WSU a 6-2 cushion with 16:16 left.

Scoring was hard to come by over the next 9:39 of the contest as each team combined for only 13 points, but the Warriors still held a 14-7 advantage with 6:37 left.

From there, the Dragons scored the next three points, but WSU rallied to connect on back-to-back triples from Thomas and Amelia Davis (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) to lead 20-10 with 3:03 left.

Tiffin would end the half on a 5-0 run, slimming the deficit to 20-15 at the break.

Wayne State makes its first visit to Ohio Dominican on Saturday to face the Panthers at 3:00 p.m.
