Women's Basketball Upended At Top-Ranked Ashland

Thompson tallied a career-high 16 points.

ASHLAND, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (0-1 overall) began its 2023-24 regular season at the defending national champion and top-ranked Ashland University Eagles (1-0 overall) and fell 98-61 on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
After winning the opening tip, sophomore Taylor Thompson was rewarded with a bucket off a feed from senior Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) just 11 seconds into the contest.  AU scored four straight points before junior Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) made a pair of foul shots.  A driving lay-up by McArthur tied the game at 6-6 with 6:10 remaining in the opening period.

The Eagles went on a 10-0 run to lead 16-6 with just over four minutes left.  A lay-up by freshman McKenna Ferguson (Grandville, Mich. / Byron Center) ended the Ashland spurt.  A Ferguson steal led to a Thompson bucket and a McArthur steal led to a Tripp lay-up cutting the deficit to four (16-12).

AU ended the opening stanza on a 11-2 run to lead 27-14 after 10 minutes.

Second Quarter
The Eagles began the second period on a 7-0 spurt before a pair of free throws by sophomore Thaya Luse (Elburn, Ill. / Example Academy).  A jumper by newcomer ZaMaria Polk (Detroit, Mich. / Mumford) made the score 36-18, and a few minutes later McArthur drained a triple pulling WSU within 16 at 39-23.

The rest of the first half was nearly even with Ashland holding a 10-8 scoring edge to lead 49-31 at intermission.

Third Quarter
Tripp scored the first points after halftime, but AU responded by scoring 17 of the next 19 points to take a 66-35 lead with just over three minutes left in the third period.

A Thompson bucket ended the WSU scoring drought of nearly 4:30.

Ashland led 79-43 after 30 minutes after out-scoring the Warriors 13-6 over the final 2:30 of the quarter.

Fourth Quarter
The final period was nearly even with AU holding a 19-18 scoring edge.

Thompson tallied six points on 3-of-3 shooting, plus contributed two steals in the fourth quarter alone.
