Men's Basketball Claims Exhibition Win At Detroit Mercy

Warriors win 88-78 behind five players in double figures.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team completed its exhibition slate with an 88-78 triumph at the University of Detroit Mercy's Calihan Hall on Thursday evening in the annual City College Series contest.  WSU out-scored the hosts in each half, and had five players in double figures, plus another player with eight points and eight assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The Warriors scored the first four points of the game on a field goal by Matt Coffey (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) on the game's opening possession, and a jumper by classmate Carmelo Harris (Flint, Mich. / Beecher) on the ensuing possession.  After a triple by Titan Jayden Stone, senior Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) answered with a jumper and newcomer Colin Golson, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Ferndale [Siena / Eastern Michigan) responded with a triple following a UDM bucket.

Nearly a minute after a Harris trey, sophomore Kareem Aburashed (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day [Macomb C.C.]) had a dunk to increase the WSU advantage to nine at 14-5.  Golson, Jr. connected from beyond the arc at the 13:29 mark to make it 17-7, prior to senior Kaimen Lennox (Kansas City, Mo. / Truman H.S. [Hutchinson C.C.]) making a pair of foul shots.

The hosts pulled within five at 19-14 with 11 minutes remaining before intermission, before a pair of jumpers by Wayne State freshmen - Jordan Briggs (Muskegon, Mich.) and Hutch Ward (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) - were sandwiched around a UDM basket.  A lay-up by Coffey and a Briggs triple increased the advantage to 12 at 28-16 with minutes left.

A Harris three-pointer and two free throws by Briggs gave WSU its largest lead of the opening half (15 at 33-18) with just under seven minutes remaining before halftime.  Detroit Mercy scored seven of the next 10 points to cut the WSU margin to 11 (36-25), before a Williams, Jr. lay-up.

UDM tallied 14 of the next 20 points to pull within five at 44-39 with 75 seconds left.  Three straight points by Briggs preceded a pair of shots from the charity stripe by Titan Marcus Tankersley making the halftime score 47-41 Warriors.

Second Half
Each team scored six points in the first 3:30 after intermission, before sophomore Tamario Adley (Detroit, Mich. / Warren De La Salle [Macomb C.C.]) and Harris scored on back-to-back possessions for a 10-point advantage at 57-47.  Over the next four minutes, WSU had a 10-8 scoring edge to lead 67-55 with just over 12 minutes remaining.

A dunk by Williams, Jr. ignited a 4-0 spurt, before UDM answered with six consecutive points to make it a 10-point contest at 71-61 with just over eight minutes left.  Over the next four minutes, the Warriors held a slim 10-9 scoring advantage to lead 81-70 with just under four minutes remaining.  The Titans scored eight of the game's final 15 points.
