Berkeley header lifts SVSU to 2OT win at Davenport

CALEDONIA, Mich. – After a tough loss to open the weekend road trip, the Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team earned a thrilling double-overtime win against Davenport University Sunday in Caledonia, Mich.

The Cardinals and Panthers were scoreless for the first 80 minutes of play. SVSU seemed to be on the road to the win with a goal in the 81st minute, but Davenport tied the score six minutes later to set up overtime.

Anta Berkeley picked a tremendous time for the first goal of his SVSU career, netting the game-winner in the second overtime period (106th minute), lifting the Cardinals to the 2-1 victory.

The win moves SVSU to 7-3-0 overall and 4-2-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

In the 81st minute, Alex Gloshen played a brilliant ball through to Brady Walker who slid it past the Davenport goalkeeper for his sixth goal of the season to make it 1-0 in favor of SVSU.

The lead did not last long, as Justice Sikkema evened the match at 1-1 with a goal for Davenport in the 87th minute, sending the Cardinals and Panthers to overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime, SVSU earned a corner kick. Gloshen's corner went over to the opposite side where Robbie Bruce collected. Bruce played a high arching pass into the six-yard box to the back post where Berkeley was waiting to head it home for the winner.

The Cardinals outshot the Panthers 23-19, while Callum Harley made six saves in net for SVSU in the win.

Up next for the Cardinals is a rivalry game with Northwood University at 3:30 pm next Sunday in Midland, Mich.
