Women's Tennis Suffers 4-2 Setback at #12-Indianapolis

The Warriors next be in action on Thursday at Northwestern Ohio.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis squad (1-2 overall) finished its back-to-back set with a 4-2 loss to #12-Indianapolis (3-1 overall) on Sunday afternoon at the UIndy Tennis Center.

The Warriors and Greyhounds will meet again on Sunday, March 3, in Detroit.

DOUBLES
WSU started the match strong by winning two of three matches in doubles and garnering the opening point of the afternoon.

The nation's third-ranked team of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) picked up a 6-2 victory at the first flight over the No. 19-ranked tandem of Diane Flament and Benedetta Sensi.  The Warrior duo rebounded from a tie-breaking loss on Saturday evening vs. Washburn.

Also winning 6-2 at the No. 2 position were Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland).  The WSU pairing downed the Greyhounds' Maissane Aik and Tyffaine Pais.

In concluding doubles with all three matches ending 6-2, the Indianapolis duo of Ana Hollweg and Valentine Colin defeated Wayne State's Justine Beaulieu (Montreal, Que.) and Dessyre Obedencio (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) at the third flight by the same score as the other two affairs.

SINGLES
Indianapolis claimed four of the five individual contests to recover after trailing 1-0.

The lone Warrior to win in singles was Ruyssen, the No. 48-ranked player in Division II, at the No. 1 position.  In an all-ranked contest against #45-Flament, Ruyssen completed a 6-2, 6-4 victory in straight sets.

Playing at the No. 2 spot for the fifth time in her collegiate career, Arafat (ranked No. 31) fell 2-6, 6-2, 4-6 to Aik.

Komar drew the seventh-ranked Pais and dropped back-to-back sets of 6-4 at the third flight.  It was the first time in her career that she had played at that position.

Beaulieu lost 6-2, 6-2 against Hollweg at the No. 5 spot, while Obedencio was shut out (6-0, 6-0) in her battle with Colin at the No. 6 position.

One match went unfinished, and it was at the fourth flight.  Szpakowska dropped the opening set to the 19th-ranked Sensi 6-3, and was trailing 6-5 in the second set when the match ended prematurely.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will travel to Lima, Ohio, to battle NAIA member Northwestern Ohio on Thursday, February 15.  The match is set to begin at 1:45 p.m. from the Westwood Tennis & Fitness Center.
