Cardinals take two to close trip to Cedarville

CEDARVILLE, Ohio. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's volleyball team concluded the Cedarville University Tournament on Saturday with a pair of victories to even its season record 4-4 overall.

SVSU began early morning action in the Callan Athletic Center with a solid 25-12, 25-21, 25-27, 25-12 victory over Seton Hill before sweeping the host Yellow Jackets 25-19, 25-22, 25-22.

Against Seton Hill:

  • Madison Thompson continued her strong weekend for SVSU with a team-leading 14 kills while hitting .238.
  • Sarah Veale and Rylee Zimmer each posted a double-double with the former getting 13 kills (.225) and 10 digs while the former had 10 (.267) and 13. Veale also had a season-high four service aces.
  • Peyton Gerstacker dished 44 assists to help orchestrate a sound SVSU attack and found 13 digs.
  • The Cardinals outhit the Griffins .250 to .070, which included a blistering .467 attack percentage in the decisive fourth set when Seton Hill was also held to just minus-.029.
  • Kelsey Vittitow tied opponent Mariela Alvarado with a match-high 19 digs.
  • Zimmer also spearheaded a strong net presence for the Cardinals—who had nine team blocks—with a match-best five total blocks.
  • SVSU got off to a strong start in the first set, 25-12, thanks to a .310 attack percentage and holding the Griffins to negative territory (-.025).
  • Seton Hill's Paige Cole spiked 19 kills to lead all players.
  • The Griffins lost for just the second time in seven matches to start the season.

Against Cedarville:

  • The Cardinals employed a solid attack with a .265 clip as Veale registered a match-high 13 kills (.323) and Thompson had 11 (.281).
  • Cam Davenport paced the Yellow Jackets with 12 kills (.258) and a match-best 17 digs.
  • Veale also notched 11 digs to complete another double-double for the visitors.
  • Vittitow and Zimmer aided the SVSU defense with 15 and 13 digs, respectively.
  • Teammate Makaylah Roberts chipped in six kills (.667), a match-best four blocks and an ace.
  • Gerstacker made 36 assists which were one less than Cedarville had as an entire team (37). She also had four kills and two blocks.

Next weekend, the Cardinals commence Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Lake Superior State on Friday (2 p.m.) before returning home to square off against Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday (3 p.m.).
