Men's Basketball Drops Back-And-Forth Affair At Parkside

Four Warriors score in double figures.

KENOSHA, Wisc. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (8-11 overall, 2-8 GLIAC) fell 89-81 at the University of Wisconsin Parkside (10-10 overall, 5-5 GLIAC) Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
The first 20 minutes featured four ties and seven lead changes with the host Rangers holding a 14:26 to 2:09 edge in time with the lead.

After UWP had its largest advantage of the opening half (10 points) at 17-7 just over five minutes into the contest, the Warriors responded with five consecutive points on buckets by freshman Jordan Briggs (Muskegon, Mich.) and senior Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) along with a free throw by rookie Rob Lee, Jr. (Flint, Mich. / Beecher).

WSU's deficit remained between five and seven points for the next couple of minutes, until a basket by UWP's Josiah Palmer extended the hosts margin to nine (25-16) at the 10:26 mark.  A triple by Briggs and a lay-up from senior Kaimen Lennox (Kansas City, Mo. / Truman H.S.) pulled Wayne State within four (25-21).

Sophomore Carmelo Harris (Flint, Mich. / Beecher) drained a long range jumper at the 6:49 mark to make it a three-point game (29-26), and just over three minutes later a lay-up by Harris cut the WSU deficit to one (31-30).

Each team scored eight points over the final 3:30 before halftime giving Parkside a 39-38 lead after 20 minutes.

Second Half
A jumper by junior Colin Golson, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Ferndale) 98 seconds after intermission, put the Warriors ahead 40-39.  After the contest was tied at 42-42, and 44-44, a jumper by Williams, Jr., and a three-pointer from Lennox increased the visitors lead to six (51-45) with just over 15 minutes remaining.

WSU trailed 59-51 after a 14-0 run by the Rangers in just over a two-minute span.  Wayne State responded with a 10-3 spurt to pull within one at 64-63.

Lee, Jr. drained a shot from beyond the arc with 3:20 remaining to knot the game at 76-76, and 30 seconds later Williams, Jr. connected from long range to again tie the score at 79-79.

Over the final 2:50, WSU managed just one field goal - a lay-up by sophomore Matt Coffey (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) - with 25 seconds left which cut the deficit to five (86-81).  Meanwhile, the Rangers also made just one field goal, but were 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.
