KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse opened the 2019 season with a 12-11 road victory over Rockhurst University (1-4) on a cold, foggy and windy Friday evening at Bourke Field.
It also starts the head coaching career of
Heather Coppola with a victory and moves CSP to 2-0 all-time against Rockhurst, also defeating the Hawks in a tight 16-12 comeback win in 2017 for the program's first-ever win over a Division II program and first-ever road win in the inaugural season.
Concordia heads across the Show Me State to St. Charles in the St. Louis area to face #4 Lindenwood on Sunday at noon.
Freshman
Mary Keating scored the game-winner with 40 seconds to play in the game. She had an impressive debut, also dishing out four assists to tie the program's single game record.
Three Golden Bears netted hat tricks in the win, juniors Kaley Heinl and
Alina Boyce and sophomore
Erica Peterson, who added an assist to set a new career high with four points. Junior
Maddie Hentges also had a pair of points with a goal and an assist.
After Rockhurst scored the first two goals of the game and started with a 3-1 lead in the first 11 minutes of play, the Golden Bears pulled ahead with a 9-to-1 scoring run.
The defense held Rockhurst to just one goal over a 25-minute stretch of play from the 10:46 mark of the first half when they scored their third goal to the 5:39 mark of the second half when they finally netted their fifth.
Additionally, Concordia held Rockhurst scoreless for over 20 minutes of play that included a smaller 6-0 spurt to break a 4-4 tie, going ahead 10-4 on junior
Kailey Heinl's third goal of the game in the fifth minute of the second half.
But the host Hawks came storming back in the second half, using a 7-1 stretch of play starting at 5:39 until they tied the game at 11 with 28:12 to go.
After Keating's game-winner, sophomore
Margot Coomes secured her sixth draw control of the game, allowing the Golden Bears to run out the clock. Coomes also scored a goal in the game and led the team with a pair of ground balls.
Junior goalie
Katie Lottsfeldt secured the win in the crease, saving five shots in each half to register her first double-digit save game of the season, a feat she accomplished six times during her All-GLIAC Second Team season a year ago.
Concordia out-shot Rockhurst 32-30 including a 17-12 first half advantage that allowed CSP to take a 7-4 lead into the intermission. The Golden Bears were also more successful on the clear, converting 16-of-20 to Rockhurst's 14-of-19.
Rockhurst was led by Logan Derosia's three goals while four others had two goal performances including Marianna Anderson who added six draw controls.
