Softball Drops Two Close Contests At Rebel Spring Games

Warriors fall to CUP, 4-3, and UIndy, 3-1.

Kissimmee, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (5-7 overall) dropped a pair of contests Monday in the Rebel Spring Games.  WSU was edged 4-3 by the California (Pa.) Vulcans (8-3 overall) in the first game, before falling 3-1 to seventh-ranked University of Indianapolis (14-1 overall) in the nightcap.

CUP scored once in the second on a pair of singles sandwiched around a sacrifice bunt to take a 1-0 lead.

The Vulcans added to their lead with a pair of runs in the third on a couple of hits and one WSU error that resulted in both runs being unearned.

CUP increased its advantage to 4-0 in the fifth as Natalie Wideman was hit by a pitch leading off the frame.  She went to second on a sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on an RBI single by Paige Johnson.

The Warriors battled back in the bottom of the seventh and left the tying run and winning run in scoring position.

Senior shortstop Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) led off the last frame with a single.  Sophomore second baseman Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) followed with a double to left.  Histed scored WSU's first run on a ground out.  Senior first baseman Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) had a two-out double plating Fulton, while junior outfielder Stephanie Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) added an RBI single cutting the deficit to 4-3.  Freshman designated player Shelby Spano (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) singled and both runners advanced on a double steal.  A ground out ended the contest.

Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) went the first six innings allowing six hits and four runs.  Emily Wickerham (North Branch, Mich.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

Hope Spancake improved to 4-1 for CUP by limiting WSU to three runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts and one walk as the Warriors stranded 10 runners.

Fulton had three hits to pace Wayne State against the Vulcans.

The Warriors scored in the top of the first versus the Greyhounds as Fulton had an infield single, and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore outfielder Logan White (Brantford, Ont. / Johnson C.V.I.).  Senior third baseman Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) delivered an RBI single plating Fulton.

UI answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a pair of hits, a stolen base, a walk and a sacrifice fly.

The Greyhounds tallied the final run in the bottom of the second on an error, a single and a two-out RBI single by Kelsey Rummel who had scored UIndy's first run an inning prior.

Freshman Briana Lee (Canton, Mich. / Salem) went the distance striking out seven.  She allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits.

Freshman centerfield Shannon Hilton (Gilford, Ont. / Bradford) had WSU's third hit, a two-out single in the fifth ending a streak of 13 straight Warrior batters retired by Greyhound pitcher Audrey Ernst.
