Baseball Cruises Past Northern State, Falls to Walsh

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (9-2 overall) continued its Spring Break trip in Florida at the RussMatt Invitational on Friday with two games.  The Warriors topped Northern State (4-5 overall) 8-3 in game one but lost to Walsh (5-7 overall) in game two, 4-2.

GAME ONE vs. NORTHERN STATE (W, 8-3)
HOW IT HAPPENED

Wayne State threatened in the bottom of the first inning after singles from Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) and Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School).  However, the Warriors were unable to produce any more offense in the frame.  Dillon McInerney (Richmond, Mich.) (3-0) struck out the first two batters in the top of the second inning but the Wolves followed with a walk and a single.  The second hit of the inning nearly gave Northern State the lead but Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) cut down the runner trying to score at home to end the inning.

Robert Iacobelli (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Brother Rice) drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the second inning and promptly stole second base.  Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) single into left field to give WSU a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.  Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) sent a one-out double to right field in the bottom of the third inning and later scored on a Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) single through the right side, extending WSU's advantage to 2-0.

WSU took advantage of two defensive miscues by the Wolves in the bottom of the fourth inning.  The Warriors scored four runs on four hits and two errors.  Foley started the inning by reaching on an error and Finkbeiner followed with a single but another mistake allowed Foley to advance to third base.  DeLanoy tripled home a pair of runs and MacLean followed with an RBI  double.  Kelly gave the Green & Gold a 6-0 lead with an RBI double into center field.  NSU finally got to McInerney with a run on two hits in the top of the fifth inning.  Another outfield assist, allowed WSU to escape the inning with limited damage as the third out went from left field to third base to second base.

Kelly stretched the home lead to 8-1 with an RBI single after he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Northern State scored a run in the top of the sixth inning on three hits but the third outfield assist of the day (right field to second base) slowed the Wolves' momentum.  NSU trimmed the deficit to 7-3 with an inside the park home run in the top of the eighth inning.  MacLean started the bottom of the eighth inning with a double and later score on a pinch-hit single from Nate Roede (Byron Center, Mich.).

AT THE PLATE
MacLean paced the WSU offense that cranked out 17 hits and eight RBI, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI.  Finkbeiner finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored, while Kelly, and Jorah each posted two hits.

ON THE MOUND
McInerney earned his third win of the season by allowing one run in five innings on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts.  Josh Nelson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) worked three innings and struck out six batters, while allowing two earned runs.  Nick Cowen (Tecumseh, Mich.) worked the ninth inning and did not allow a hit or a run.

GAME TWO vs. WASLH (L, 2-4)
HOW IT HAPPENED

Both teams went scoreless through the first two innings but the Warriors struck first on an RBI single from Finkbeiner in the bottom of the third inning.  The Cavaliers looked poised to tie or take the lead in the top of the fourth inning but Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) was able to strand the bases loaded.

Wayne State held a 1-0 lead after a 1-2-3 inning in the the top of the seventh.  However, Walsh used three hits and two walks to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning.  Richard Hovde (Saline, Mich.) (1-1) was able to leave two runners on base but the damage had been done.  The Cavs added a run in the top of the ninth inning to take a 4-1 advantage.

Finkbeiner started the bottom of the ninth inning with an infield single but a 4-6-3 double play would clear the bases.  WSU attempted to rally with two outs as CJ Drogosch (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) drove in MacLean to pull WSU within two but that would be as close as the Warriors would come.

AT THE PLATE
Finkbeiner finished 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Green & Gold offensive attack.

ON THE MOUND
Waldrop pitched six scoreless innings and struck out five batters.  Hovde was saddled with the loss after allowing three runs in an inning and a 1/3.  Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) worked the final inning and 2/3, allowing one run on two hits and two walks.
