Women's Basketball Posts First Win of the Season against Ohio Dominican

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team earned a 68-64 victory over the Ohio Dominican Panthers in the team's final game of the 2021 Midwest Region Crossover on Saturday, Nov. 13 in a nonconference game at the Callan Athletic Center in Cedarville, Ohio. With the victory, the Lakers record sits at 1-1 following the first weekend of the season. 

First Half:

The Panthers took a 5-0 lead within the first minute of the game and Mattison Rayman followed with a jump shot for her first two points of the game (5-2). Sophomore guard Jozie Bontrager made a three-pointer with 4:30 left in the first quarter to pull within two points of Ohio Dominican. The Lakers took their first lead of the game with 3:44 left on the clock when Makenzie Bray hit a three-pointer (8-7). Rayman and Bray both scored field goals in the final minute of the quarter to hold a 12-9 lead after the first quarter. 

Lake Superior State outscored the Panthers 26-23 in a high-scoring second quarter. The Lakers opened the second quarter with a three pointer by Margot Woughter to go up 15-9 in the first minute of play. Mattison Rayman went on a run of five straight points as the Lakers took a nine point lead (20-11) within the first two minutes of the quarter. Woughter made her second three-point jumper of the game with 7:23 left in the first half as the Lakers lead extended to 12 points (25-13). The Lakers continued to hold onto the lead through the rest of the second quarter and led by six points (38-32) following the first twenty minutes of play. 

Second Half:

Bray scored the Lakers first points of the second half with 7:56 left on the clock in the third quarter as she made a basket from behind the arc to give the Lakers a 41-33 lead. The Panthers pulled within two points of the Lakers (41-39) but the Lakers would hold the lead (46-42) at the end of the third quarter. 

Identical to the third quarter, Bray opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with a three-pointer. Bray followed with a layup and a pair of free throws to score the first seven points of the quarter, extending the Lakers lead to 53-42. Bray continued her strong game for the Lakers as she made another three with 4:27 left in regulation to make it a 58-46 game, in favor of the Lakers. 

Rayman made a layup and a free throw with 1:35 left on the clock as the Lakers led by 12 points (61-49). The Panthers made a push in the final minute and a half as Kennedy Schlabach made back-to-back three point jump shots to pull within six points (61-55). Rayman made a pair of free throws as the Lakers led by eight points (63-55) with less than a minute on the clock. 

Ohio Dominican's Brynn Mullet also made a pair of threes in the final minute as the Panthers cut the lead to just four points (67-63) with :17 seconds left in the game. The Lakers held off the Panthers defensively in the final seconds to earn a hard-fought 68-64 win. 

Breaking Down the Game:

Bray led the Lakers in the game as she set a new career-high in single-game points with 24. Bray went 9-for-10 in the game, including a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. In her 36 minutes on the floor, Bray also added four rebounds, two assists and three steals to lead the Lakers to the win. 

Rayman and Woughter also had strong efforts for the Lakers as both posted double-digit point totals in the win. Rayman scored 17 points in the game and added a team-leading 11 rebounds to record her second double-double of the season. Woughter, who played a team-high 39 minutes, finished the game with 16 points. 

The Lakers finished the game with a 43.8 shooting percentage, going 21-for-48 in the game. On the other end of the floor, the Panthers went 24-for-59 in the game to total a 40.7 shooting percentage. Ohio Dominican outrebounded the Lakers in the game, 37-30.
