Women's Tennis Surges Ahead in League Standings Following Win Over Ferris State

The Warriors won 6-1 on Sunday to move a match ahead of FSU with two contests remaining.

DETROIT -- In a battle between the last two undefeated programs in the GLIAC, the No. 23-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis squad (14-5 overall, 5-0 GLIAC) downed Ferris State (10-8 overall, 4-1 GLIAC) by a 6-1 score at the WSU Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon.

The win was a critical one for WSU, as it put the Warriors in position to win the GLIAC Regular-Season Championship with two matches remaining.  Wayne State is now one match in front of the Bulldogs at 5-0 within the league.

Sunday's match was also the first outdoor action of the season on the new WSU Tennis Courts, which were renovated prior to the 2024 campaign.  The Warriors had played all prior matches indoors at the Duchene Athletic Facility.

The Green and Gold wrapped up its home slate during the regular season with a 9-1 ledger, as the match was the final one in Detroit barring a potential hosting role for the NCAA Midwest Regional.

DOUBLES
WSU put together a clean sweep of doubles, of which all were by similar scores.

The action at the first flight was a battle of two teams nationally ranked via the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), as the eighth-ranked Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) faced the No. 38-ranked Morgan Waller and Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer.  The Wayne State tandem secured a 6-4 victory in the contest.

Notching their sixth consecutive win in doubles were Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) - the No. 48-ranked team in the country.  They had a 6-3 triumph over Sophie Daavettila and Parker Nolan.

Not to be outdone, Shanice Weekes (London, England) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) registered a 6-4 win against Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer and Katherine Earnest.

SINGLES
The Green and Gold grabbed five of the six singles matches to coast to the 6-1 victory on Sunday.

It was not easy for the No. 18-ranked Ruyssen at the No. 1 position, as she and Waller went to three sets with the Warrior claiming the first 6-4 and the Bulldog the second at 6-1.  The two played a 10-point super tiebreaker, which Ruyssen won by a 10-6 tally for her fifth straight singles triumph.

Arafat made quick work of Daavettila at the No. 2 spot, as she won 6-2, 6-1 for her sixth consecutive win.

Also victorious for a sixth consecutive match was Szpakowska with her 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Maria Hernandez Ferrer at the fourth flight.  The sophomore Warrior is 15-1 in dual matches this spring in the category.

Earning set wins of 6-2 and 6-1 (same as Arafat) was Gorgidze in her victory vs. Nolan at the No. 5 position, while Weekes blanked Aimee Reynoso Cupido 6-0 in the first set at the No. 6 spot.  The sophomore Weekes then downed her FSU opponent 6-4 in the second set.

Ferris State's only point on the day came from Ana Hernandez Ferrer at the third flight against Komar.  The Wayne State player won 6-1 in the first set but lost 6-4 and 10-8 in the final two sets for the heartbreaking defeat.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will look to move one step closer to becoming sole owners of the GLIAC Regular-Season Championship when it faces Purdue Northwest on Friday, April 19.  Action is scheduled for 2 p.m. Eastern from the Match Point Tennis Facility in Griffith, Ind.
