SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University volleyball team earned its first win of the season, sweeping a road match at Lake Superior State University Friday in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.
Tied at 14-14 in the first set, SVSU took control with an 11-3 run to go up early as the Cardinals cruised to the three-set win. The set scores were 25-17, 25-18, 25-18.
The win pushes SVSU to 1-6 overall and 1-6 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Maria Vukaj led the SVSU offense with 13 kills, adding 15 digs. Peyton Gerstacker recorded a team-high 22 assists, while Haley Clum added eight kills. Libero Kelsey Vittitow finished with a team-high 17 digs, while Addison Bouza chipped in with nine digs.
The Cardinals finished with 14 total blocks as a team, including six from Emily Friesl.
Halle Grulke led the Lakers with eight kills, while Malia Howe added 20 digs.
The Cardinals and Lakers close the weekend series in a return trip at 2 pm Sunday at the Hamilton Gymnasium in University Center, Mich.
