Men's Basketball Falters vs. Saginaw Valley State, 71-57

The Warriors missed all 10 three-point attempts on Thursday night.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (4-10 overall, 1-9 GLIAC) lost 71-57 to visiting Saginaw Valley State (12-6 overall, 6-4 GLIAC) on Thursday night inside the Matthaei, extending WSU's losing streak to seven games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A 12-foot jumper from graduate student James Gordon IV (Shelbyville, Ky. / Chicago Simeon) at the 17:45 mark of the first half kept WSU close at 5-4.  The Warriors trailed 12-4 with 15:23 to play following a three-pointer from Malik Ellison.  The visitors advantage grew to 17-8 at the 12:52 mark after a triple by Delano Smith.  Freshman forward Kylin Grant (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) connected on a 15-foot jumper to make 19-14 in favor of the Cardinals at the 7:14 point.  WSU used an 8-4 run to trim deficit to three, 23-20, with 4:15 remaining in the half.  Sophomore guard Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) capped the rally with a tough layup.  However, SVSU responded with back-to-back buckets to stretch its lead to 28-20 at the 1:49 mark.  A basket from senor guard Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) brought the Green & Gold within four, 28-24, with 54 seconds left to play in the period.  Saginaw Valley State found itself with its largest lead of the stanza (nine points, 33-24) at halftime following a Myles Belyeu triple to beat the first-half buzzer.

The Cards opened the second half on an 8-2 run to extend their lead to 41-26 at the 18:43 mark.  Back-to-back buckets by freshman forward Nate Talbot (Lake Orion, Mich.) brought WSU within 11, 41-30, with 17:25 left in the contest.  SVSU led 48-36 with 13:26 remaining.  Neely was fouled while attempting a three-pointer and made all three shots from the charity stripe to make it 53-41 in favor of SVSU at the 11:02 mark.  Two more points for Neely trimmed the SVSU lead to back to 12, 55-43, with 9:55 left in regulation.  A running jumper by Marshall made it a 10-point game at the 7:44 mark.  That would be the closest the Warriors would come the rest of the way as the Cardinals would win comfortably, 71-57.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Neely led the way with 21 points along with seven assists, while Gordon finished with 10 points and six rebounds.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
