GVSU halts SVSU streak with sweep in Allendale

ALLENDALE, Mich. – Grand Valley State University needed 10 innings to stop Saginaw Valley State University's eight-game win streak in the opener of a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Tuesday in Allendale, Mich.

The Cardinals and Lakers were scoreless through the first nine innings of game one. After SVSU broke through with a run in the top of the 10th, GVSU tied the game in the bottom half and hit a three-run home run to end it later in the inning, taking game one 4-1.

GVSU held off a rally by SVSU in game two, to complete the sweep with a 4-2 win. The losses drop the Cardinals to 27-14 overall and 16-12 in the GLIAC.

Emily Depew (9-2) went the distance for the Cardinals in game one, keeping the Lakers off the board through nine innings. She tossed 9.2 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits, while walking two and striking out eight. Depew threw 159 pitches, including 110 for strikes.

The lone run of the game for the Cardinals came on an error by the Lakers that allowed Blasia Moyler to score. After GVSU tied the score in the 10th, Nikoma Holmen ended the contest with a three-run home run.

Sarah Gersch finished with two hits, including a double to lead the SVSU offense.

GVSU took control of game two early and built a 4-0 lead after three innings. Sabrina Sage got the Cardinals on the board with an RBI single in the fourth. SVSU attempted to rally in the seventh and picked up a run on a single from Julia Salisbury, but the Lakers closed the door the rest of the way.

Julia Mundy (9-5) took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs, two earned on seven hits, walking two, and striking out two in 3.1 innings.

The regular season ends for SVSU with a doubleheader at Ferris State University at 1 pm Wednesday in Big Rapids, Mich.
