Women's Tennis Kicks Off Florida Trip By Shutting Out Florida National

Five of the six singles matches were won in straight sets on the way to a 7-0 win.

HIALEAH, Fla. -- The seventh-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (10-1 overall) defeated NAIA member Florida National University (0-6 overall) 7-0 on Friday afternoon at Goodlet Park in Hialeah for the Warriors' 10th win of the spring season. 

DOUBLES
WSU claimed the opening point of the match with some impressive play in doubles. 

First to finish was the pair of Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) at the No. 1 spot.  They nearly shut out Paulina Jankun and Emerald Cooke with a 6-1 victory.

The team clinched the doubles point with the play of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) at the No. 1 doubles spot, as the junior and redshirt freshman handed their opponents a 6-2 loss.

Finally, Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich.) were a formidable duo at the No. 3 spot, winning 6-3 over Vanessa Simone and Nadia Abad of FNU. 

SINGLES
All six point went to the Warriors to begin the Florida trip with a spotless start. 

Moving to 11-0 in singles action was Ruyssen, who nearly pulled off a shut-out of her own against Vera Hoekstra.  The freshly-ranked 14th best singles player in Division II won 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. 

Also notching her 11th win (and 11-0 record) in singles was Szpakowska, who picked up a close 7-5 win in the first set, before capturing an overall victory with a 6-3 triumph in the second set.  This victory was the freshman's sixth (6-0) at the No. 4 spot. 

Gorgidze won in straight sets over Simone at the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-1, officially clinching the victory for the Warriors with their fourth point of the afternoon. 

Suki Mandair (Dexter, Mich.) was at the No. 6 singles spot, and she also picked up a win in straight sets (6-4, 6-0) vs. Karyna Krykunenko.

At the No. 5 spot, Weekes won 6-0, 6-4 against Abad. 

Finishing the afternoon for WSU was Arafat, who needed three sets to defeat Salome SIerra after taking a 6-1 defeat in her first set.  She followed up the loss by posting back-to-back 6-1 victories in the final two sets. 

UP NEXT
Wayne State will duel with Atlantis University on Saturday in Miami.  The match will begin at 10 a.m.
