Cardinals close regular season with split against Bulldogs

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team closed the 2021 regular season with a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against Ferris State University Wednesday in Big Rapids, Mich.

The Cardinals rallied from an early deficit in game one to take the opener 4-2. The SVSU offense failed to get going in the finale, as Ferris State earned the split with a 3-0 win.

The split closes the regular season for the Cardinals with a record of 28-15 overall and 17-13 in the GLIAC.

After Ferris State took a 2-0 lead on a home run in the third, the Cardinals cut the deficit in half with an RBI single from Sara Moos in the top of the fourth. Blasia Moyler tied the game with an RBI single in the sixth and Kael Prickett put SVSU up with an RBI later in the inning. Julia Salisbury gave the Cardinals an insurance run with an RBI single in the seventh.

Emily Depew got the start, pitching four innings, allowing two runs on three hits, walking one, and striking out eight. Alyssa Muench (4-2) picked up the win in relief with three scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out one.

SVSU was held to four hits in game two, including two from Meagan VerVaecke. The Bulldogs scored two in the first and one in the third for the only runs of the game. Julia Mundy was charged with the loss, pitching five innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, walking one, and striking out four.

The Cardinals move on to the GLIAC Softball Postseason Tournament set for May 11-13 in Sandusky, Ohio.
