PREVIEW: Michigan Tech Soccer Hosts Cardinals and Bulldogs

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women's soccer team returns to Houghton for the first home weekend of GLIAC competition. On Friday, the Huskies host Saginaw Valley at 7 p.m., while Sunday's noon contest is against Ferris State.

Fans can catch both games on FloSports, as part of the four-year media partnership with the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference beginning this fall.

About the Cardinals

Saginaw Valley State is 3-2-1 and 1-1-0 within the conference through the first week of GLIAC contests. Last weekend, the Cardinals bested Davenport (2-1) on Friday (Sept. 9) afternoon before falling to No. 3 Grand Valley State (3-2) on Sunday (Sept. 11).

Jensen Taylor accounted for both assists in the 2-1 win against Davenport, with goals coming from Rileigh Garbarz and Stephanie Strong. Goalkeeper Kennedi Pugh made one save in the contest.

Rileigh Garbarz and Madi Bajis scored goals in the 3-2 loss against No. 3 Grand Valley State on Sunday, with Lainey Garbarz making six saves in the net for the Cardinals.

Freshman Midfielder Rileigh Garbarz leads the Cardinals with two goals this season, both coming last weekend. Stephanie Strong has two assists to her name through six contests.

About the Bulldogs

Ferris State enters the second week of GLIAC play with an overall record of 1-2-2 and 0-0-2 within the loop. Most recently, the Bulldogs accrued two stalemates with the contest against No. 3 Grand Valley State on Friday (Sept. 9), ending 0-0. The same outcome occurred in Sunday's tilt (Sept. 11) against Davenport, with the Bulldogs and the Panthers concluding in a 1-1 draw.

In the tie against Grand Valley State, sophomore goalkeeper Darya Mosallaei earned her 14th career shutout, making three saves in the game. Katie Nestico led the offensive chances for the Bulldogs, having four of the five shots on goal for Ferris State.

Payton Price netted the goal for Ferris State in the 21st minute to end the scoring for the game.

Senior forward Isabella Zamborini leads the Bulldogs with two goals on the season to go with an assist. The aforementioned Mosallaei, has logged 450 minutes in the net for Ferris State, having two shutouts this season with a save percentage of .778.

About the Huskies

Michigan Tech concluded the first weekend of conference clashes on the road with a win against Purdue Northwest (2-1) on Friday (Sept. 9) and a loss against Parkside (2-1) in the rain on Sunday (Sept. 11). Overall the Black & Gold hold a record of 3-3-0 with a 1-1-0 ledger in the GLIAC.

In Friday's victory against the Pride, senior Neve Badalow and freshman Alyvia Sanom both netted their second goals of the year. Senior Stephanie Yeager had a foot in both plays, earning assists on both goals, giving Badalow the ball in the lower right corner and putting the ball in play off a corner kick in Sanom's header.

Yeager was the lone goal scorer for Michigan Tech in the slip-up at Parkside on Sunday, netting the goal off of a free kick in the 62nd minute.

As has been the trend this season, in both contests last weekend, the Huskies held the advantage in shots and corner kicks. MTU accounted for 11 shots and five corner kicks against Purdue Northwest to go with 18 shots and eight corner kicks in the Parkside contest.

Senior goalkeeper Gracie VanLangevelde has made 15 saves through six games for an average of 2.50 saves per game while accounting for two shutouts.

One Last Thing

The Huskies are second in the conference in both shots per game (17.50) and shots on goal per game (8.83). 

Jordan Noble leads the Black & Gold with 13 shots and seven getting on target for a SOG percentage of .538.
