Men's Basketball Drops Season Finale

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (5-18, 4-16 GLIAC) lost its season finale to Davenport (14-13, 10-10 GLIAC) 90-64 on Saturday afternoon.  Prior to tip-off seniors Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) and LJ DeWolf (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ann Arbor Huron) were recognized as a part of Senior Day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A three-point play from David Hughes (Southfield, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) tied the game at 5-5 early in the first half and a jumper by Ray Williams, Jr. (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) put WSU on top 9-7 at the 15:50 mark.  However, the Panthers responded with an 8-0 run to take a 15-9 lead with 12:59 to play before halftime.  Avery Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) connected from long range to pull the Warriors within three, 19-16, at the 9:52 mark.  Two more points from Lewis tied the game at 19-19 and a dunk by Lewis put the Green & Gold in front 25-19 with 6:50 to play in the half.  DU regained the momentum and led 36-30 following a Chris Rollins triple at the 3:09 mark.  The visitors led 42-35 at the break.

Davenport came out of the locker rooms fast and led 49-37 after two minutes of action in the second half.  Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) trimmed the home deficit to five, 51-46, with a bucket at the 15:22 mark.  But that would be as close as WSU would come the rest of the way as the Panthers won 90-64.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Hughes finished with a team-high 14 points, while Neely posted 13 points and seven assists.  With those assists Neely moves into third place all-time with 383 career helpers.  He passed Darrell Evans (2003-05).  Lewis chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds.

LEADING THE PANTHERS
Five Panthers scored at least 10 points led by Rollins with a game-high 20 points.  Mercedes Leech, Jr. had 14 points, while both Jarrin Randall and Chaz Birchfield tallied 12 points.  Jairus Stevens rounded out the group with 10 points.
