Men's Basketball Nearly Leads Wire-to-Wire in 64-51 Win Over Parkside

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (6-15 overall, 3-14 GLIAC) led nearly the entire game in a 64-51 victory over Parkside (10-15 overall, 6-11 GLIAC) inside the Matthaei on Saturday afternoon.  The victory was WSU's second straight at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior guard Brailen Neely (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) gave the Warriors a 10-6 lead early in the first half at the 17:24 mark.  A jumper from sophomore guard Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) pushed the home advantage to 14-8 with 15:51 left to play in the stanza.  Graduate forward James Gordon IV (Shelbyville, Ky. / Chicago Simeon) stretched WSU's lead to 17-13 at the 12:33 mark.  Marshall connected from deep to push the Green & Gold lead to 27-16 with 7:46 to play.  A 12-foot jumper by freshman forward Nate Talbot (Lake Orion, Mich.) made it 31-20 at the 5:16 mark and Parkside answered with a bucket to trim the home lead to nine, 31-22, with 4:22 to play.  An assist from Neely to Talbot followed by a fast break bucket by Neely moved the Warriors ahead 35-24 at the 2:07 mark.  The Rangers scored the final four points of the opening half to pull within seven at intermission (35-28).

The UWP run continued to start the second half and as the Rangers scored the first three points to trim the home margin to four, 35-31, at the 18:52 mark.  Neely carried the offense early and scored six straight points to extend WSU's lead to 41-31 with 16:19 remaining.  The Rangers used a 10-0 run to tied the game at 41-41 at the 12:53 mark after triples from Jonah Matulle and Brandon Hau.  Wayne State responded with baskets from Talbot and a triple by Neely for a 46-41 lead with 11:56 left to play.  Neely hit all three free throws after being fouled behind the arc, pushing the margin to 49-44 at the 11:16 mark.  The run reached 7-0 after two more free throws from Neely gave WSU a 53-44 advantage with 9:47 left in regulation.  A layup from freshman forward Kylin Grant (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) pushed the home lead to 61-46 at the 6:20 mark.  Wayne State extended the lead to 63-48 with 3:10 left to play on a Talbot basket.  WSU would go on to win comfortably 64-51.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Neely led WSU with a game-high 21 points to go with eight assists, while Marshall finished with 14 points.  Talbot finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.  Gordon collected his fifth double-double of the campaign with 10 points and 11 boards.

LEADING THE RANGERS
Hau was the only Ranger to score in double figures as he tallied 17 points.

ONE BIG THING
Wayne State had its best day on defense in terms of points allowed (51) and held Parkside to 37 percent (20-of-54) shooting from the floor, which is the best performance since Jan. 4th at Northern Michigan (.322).
