Season comes to a close for Cardinals in GLIAC Tourney loss

GARY, Ind. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team was eliminated from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday at The SteelYard in Gary, Ind. 

No. 1 seed Davenport University defeated No. 5 SVSU 12-8 in an elimination game. The Cardinals' season ends with a 21-28 overall record.

Game Breakdown:

  • The teams traded runs in both the first and second innings, making it 2-2 heading into the third inning. 
  • Davenport scored three runs in the bottom of the third, and one in the fourth inning to take a 6-2 lead. 
  • The Cardinals mounted a comeback in the top of the fifth. Colin Cornwell hit a solo home run to left field, before Martin Money hit a two-run home run to make it 6-5. 
  • SVSU tied it at 6-6 in the fifth with an RBI single by Tucker Roe, scoring Todd Paperd.
  • The Panthers got the lead back in the bottom half of the fifth before the Cardinals tied it at 7-7 in the top of the sixth. 
  • Davenport took the lead for good with a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning.
  • SVSU got a run back in the eighth thanks to a Reed Raymond sacrifice fly, but Davenport added an insurance run and closed the game out to advance. 
  • Christopher Schmees got the start on the mound, pitching 2.2 innings and striking out two before he was relieved by Kendall Anthes. Anthes was relieved by Hunter Merillat (3-4) who took the loss.
