Ferris State Men's Tennis Falls In GLIAC Championship Match To Wayne State

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis team fought a hard battle, but came up short in the 2023 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship match on Sunday as Wayne State pulled out a 4-0 win at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.

The Warriors avenged an earlier 4-3 regular-season setback to the Bulldogs by taking the doubles round and completing the first three completed singles flights. The singles matches were tightly-contested affairs as the two league powers squared off in a highly-competitive showdown.

Wayne State, which was the national runner-up a year ago, jumped in front early by winning both the first and third doubles spots for the initial point of the contest.

In singles play, the Warriors garnered wins at one, five and six singles to knock off FSU, which was the top seed in the tournament and had claimed the GLIAC Regular-Season Championship.

Ferris State fell to 15-4 overall this year with the setback in the league final. FSU's appearance in the league tournament title match was the Bulldogs' seventh in the last eight times the tournament has been held.

The Bulldogs, who claimed the program's 20th all-time conference regular-season title this year, will now await the NCAA Division II Selection Show set for Monday evening at 8 p.m. (ET) at NCAA.com. The Bulldogs were ranked second in this past week's NCAA D2 Midwest Regional Rankings and expected to receive the program's 26th all-time and eighth-straight national tournament berth.
