Softball Wins Two From Detroit

Warriors win two close contests with the Titans.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University softball squad (14-12 overall) closed out its six-game homestand with a pair of victories over the visiting Detroit Titans (4-15 overall) Thursday afternoon at the WSU Softball Stadium.

The Warriors led 8-2 after six innings in the opener and held on for an 8-6 triumph.  In the nightcap, Detroit tied the game in the top of the seventh, then went ahead in the eighth only for the Warriors to score twice in the bottom of the eighth for a 3-2 victory.

The first game was all hitters as the teams combined for 27 hits and 14 runs despite only one walk in the contest.

WSU grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) reached on a dropped fly, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.).  She moved to third on a single by Rebecca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.).

The Titans scored twice on five hits in the top of the second to take a 2-1 advantage.

Wayne State knotted the game at two in the second as Nikki Fulton (Stratford, Ont. / St. Michael Catholic S.S.) reached on a fielder's choice following a leadoff walk to Rachel Spaccarotelli (Ray, Mich. / Romeo).  Fulton went to second on a fielder's choice, advanced to third on a throwing error by the Detroit catcher and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica).

WSU took the lead for good in the third as Omelanchuk had a one-out single, went to second on an illegal pitch and scored on a single by Makelle Barski (Trenton, Mich.).

Three straight hits leading off the fourth produced one run as Histed singled, Allen doubled and Stanley singled scoring Histed.  Allen also scored on the play, to make it 5-2, due to a fielding error in the Titan outfield.

The Warriors tacked on two more runs in the fifth as Barski had a leadoff single, and Fulton reached on a fielding error.  A wild pitch advanced both runners and another wild pitch scored Barski.  Allen's two-out infield single plated Fulton.

In the sixth, Omelanchuk had a leadoff double and crossed the plate on a single up the middle by Steph Foreman (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston).

Detroit scored four times in the top of the seventh on four hits and two WSU errors and had the tying run at the plate when relief pitcher Lauren McLaughlin (Oakville, Ont. / Holy Trinity) induced a ground ball back to the circle.

Allen led the Warriors with three hits, while Stanley, Omelanchuk and Barski all had multiple-hit games.  The top four batters in the Titan lineup all had at least two hits.

Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) improved to 6-8 with the win for WSU.  She allowed six runs (five earned) in six innings on 13 hits.  She struck out one and did not walk a batter.  McLaughlin earned her first collegiate save despite allowing all three inherited runners to score.  She surrendered just one hit in the four batters she faced.

Julia Maksym (2-6) started for Detroit and allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits in four innings.  She did not strikeout a batter and walked one.  Erin Huddleston allowed the final three WSU runs (two earned) on five hits in two innings of work.

The second contest saw just 13 hits and two runs in regulation.

Wayne State again scored in the bottom of the first as Allen singled and went to second on a ground out.  Ryan followed with an RBI single up the middle.

Both McLaughlin and Detroit's Anna Bondy put up zeros for the next five innings, until the top of the seventh.

Huddleton hit a one-out home run just to the right of the center field wall to tie the game at one.

In the top of the eighth, the Titans international tie-breaker runner scored on a two-out double down the left field line by Whitney Stratton.

In the bottom of the frame, Stanley's sacrifice bunt advanced Allen to third, where she scored on Ryan's single to left.  Omelanchuk followed with a single to left moving Ryan to second.  Foreman walked on a 3-2 pitch after both runners had advanced on a passed ball.  Fulton plated Ryan with the winning run on a single.

Wayne State out-hit Detroit 9-4 in game two.  Allen, Ryan and Foreman each had two hit affairs for the Warriors.  Four different players had hits for the Titans.

McLaughlin notched her eighth win of the season in 12 decisions by limiting Detroit to two runs (one earned) on four hits in eight innings.  She struck out two and did not walk a batter.

Bondy (0-3) went the distance for the Titans.  She allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits with one strikeout and two walks.

Wayne State will play a four-game conference series at Ohio Dominican this weekend with doubleheader action on both Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (Noon).
