Moyler two HRs, strong pitching lift SVSU to sweep

FINDLAY, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State University softball team earned a sweep of the University of Findlay on the road, allowing just one run in 13 innings Saturday in Findlay, Ohio.

The Cardinals used a pair of home runs from Blasia Moyler in game one to power to a 9-1 win. In game two, the combination of Jaclyn Groves and Alyssa Muench shutout the Oilers for a 3-0 victory, the third straight for SVSU.

The sweep pushes SVSU 11-2 overall this season, with the start of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on deck.

In the opener, Moyler doubled the early two-run lead to 4-0 with a home run in the second. After SVSU added a run on an error in the third, Moyler blasted a three-run home run in the fifth to finish with five RBIs in the win. Meagan VerVaecke added an RBI single in the sixth to put the Cardinals up eight and end the game after six innings.

Julia Mundy picked up the win to move to 4-0 on the season, allowing one unearned run on six hits, while walking one and striking out six in 4.2 innings.

Sarah Gersch got the Cardinals started in the third inning of game two with an RBI triple. Sara Moos doubled the lead in the fourth with an RBI single, followed by the second RBI of the game for Gersch in the fifth on a single.

Groves got the start in game two, tossing a scoreless 2.1 innings, allowing four hits, one walk and striking out two. Muench entered the game in the third, pitching the rest of the way, allowing just three hits, walking one and striking out five.

The Cardinals open the GLIAC season at home with a doubleheader against Davenport University starting at 2:30 pm on Wednesday at the SVSU Softball Complex.
