Baseball Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader

the Warriors have won three of the first four games of the series.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State university baseball team (13-6 overall, 5-2 GLIAC) won twice over Parkside (0-14 overall, 0-7 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon at Harwell Field to move into first place in the GLIAC standings.  The Warriors used a shutout from senior Nicholas O'Dea (Livonia, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) (2-0) to win game one 7-0 before exploding for 13 runs in game two to win 13-4.

GAME ONE (W, 7-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED

Redshirt junior Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) doubled home the game's first run in the bottom of he third inning before WSU added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, including a three-run home run from redshirt junior Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) and an RBI single from junior Jacob Badalamenti (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Warren De La Salle).

Another home run, this one from redshirt junior Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.), in the bottom of the fifth gave the Warriors a 6-0 lead.  A bases-loaded balk in the bottom of the sixth inning allowed senior Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp.) to score and put the final score at 7-0.

AT THE PLATE
Travis finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while graduate student Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

ON THE MOUND
O'Dea worked all seven innings and did not allow a run on four hits and a walk, while striking out three batters.

GAME TWO (W, 13-4)
HOW IT HAPPENED

MacLean started the scoring in game two with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning.  Wayne State added four more runs in the bottom of the second inning on two-run single by senior Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.), a passed ball and a MacLean RBI single.

The Rangers broke through in the top of the third inning with two runs on two hits and two errors to trim deficit to 5-2.  Three hits and two walks in the bottom of the fifth inning led to three more runs for the Green & Gold.  Doing the damage was Travis with an RBI single, a bases-loaded walk to Foley and a Finkbeiner RBI single. 

Wayne State took a 13-2 lead with five runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Travis added another RBI, while junior Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) drove in two runs with with a pinch-hit double.  Redshirt freshman Kyle Ray (Woodhaven, Mich.) drove in the final two runs of the frame with a two-run single into left center.

Parkside scored twice on three hits in the top of the seventh inning, including a leadoff home run by Casey Oliver.

AT THE PLATE
Finkbeiner posted a 3-for-4 game with three RBI and a run scored, while Travis turned his second three-hit game of the day, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.  MacLean drove in two runs with two hits.

ON THE MOUND
Sophomore Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) (2-1) allowed two unearned runs and struck out five over six innings.  Redshirt senior Dustin Renfroe (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Brother Rice / U of D Jesuit) pitched the seventh inning and allowed two runs (one unearned) and struck out three batters.

WSU will conclude the series tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for noon.
