Men's Tennis Wins First GLIAC Match of the Season at Grand Valley State

The Warriors nearly shut-out the Lakers on Saturday.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (11-9 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) registered its first conference victory of the season on Saturday, as the team defeated No. 39-ranked Grand Valley State (8-6 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) 6-1 at the Premier Athletic & Tennis Club.

DOUBLES
Warriors coach Bryan Morrow utilized some different doubles combinations, and the moves worked out for the Green and Gold as they were able to sweep all three contests.

One pairing unchanged was the steady No. 1 doubles team of Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany).  The third-ranked pairing in the nation picked up a 6-3 win over Sean Miller and Unai Gonzalez.

Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) played with Dom Spicer (London, England) for the first time since the fall tennis season, where the two were regular partners.  The reuniting led to a 7-6 (2) tie-breaking victory at the second flight over Jack Dausman and Freddy Cossio.

Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Joe Kelt (Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England) also reunited as a pairing, as the two were playing with each other for the first time since February 3.  Just as in the previous two matches, Laws and Kelt were victorious again, tallying a 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot.

SINGLES
Wayne State nearly swept all six singles matches as well, but did enough to win the match by taking five of the six points.

Grey, Laws, and Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich.) all won their respective contests in straight sets.  At the second flight, Grey handled Miller by scores of 6-4 and 6-3, while Laws won his match against Dausman at the fourth flight by those exact same margins.

Kitayama posted back-to-back 6-2 wins at the No. 5 spot over Martin Matov.

Needing three sets to claim victory were Drenth and Karcz.  Drenth, the No. 34-ranked player in the country, won the first (6-3) and third (6-4) sets against the No. 61-ranked Gonzalez at the first flight.

Playing at the No. 4 singles spot, Karcz similarly fell in the second set (1-6) as his teammate, but was triumphant in the first and third sets (7-5 and 6-1) to win vs. Denys Zamaraiev.

Falling in heart-breaking fashion was Kelt at the sixth flight.  Facing Ignacio Morena-Lucas, the Wayne State freshman dropped the opening set 6-2, then nabbed a 6-4 win in the second set.  In the ensuing 10-point tie-breaker, Morena-Lucas won by a score of 10-8 to give the Lakers their lone point of the evening.

UP NEXT
Remaining on the road, Wayne State will continue to face GLIAC opponents next weekend.  The team will play at Lake Superior State at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 31, then travel to Michigan Tech for a 10 a.m. match on Saturday, April 1.
