Volleyball Drops Three-Setter at Michigan Tech

The Warriors will exit GLIAC play for the Midwest Regional Crossover next weekend.

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (12-7, 6-5 GLIAC) lost in three sets at Michigan Tech (12-6, 6-5 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon by scores of 25-12, 25-21 and 25-19.  

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Huskies led the opening set 5-1 and 8-4 before a 6-0 rally gave MTU a 15-4 advantage.  The Warriors were unable to find a rhythm and lost 25-12.

Wayne State and Michigan Tech were tied 6-6 to start the second set.  The Green & Gold used a 7-0 run to go on top 15-11.  Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) sparked the rally with three kills.  However, MTU would come back to tie the set at 18-18 and then would take a 19-18 lead.  A block by Morrison and Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) brought WSU within two, 23-21, but thee Huskies captured the next two point to go up 2-0 in the match.

A block by Alexa Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) and Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) gave the Warriors a 5-1 lead early in the third set.  Points by Morrison and Giroux made it 7-5.  With Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) at the service line Wayne State used a kill by Withun, an ace plus a block to extend the margin to 12-8.  MTU won the next six points.  Wayne State tied the set at 14-14 following kills from Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) and Shell.  The home team answered with an 8-0 run to go up 22-14 and the Huskies would win 25-19.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Shell had a team-best eight kills, while Duffield finished with 25 assists.  Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) tallied 17 digs.
