Women's Basketball Falls in Sunday Afternoon Game against Ursuline

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State women's basketball team fell to the Ursuline College Arrows by a final score of 88-62 in the team's first home nonconference game of the season on Sunday, Nov. 21 in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. With the loss, the Lakers record sits at 1-2 following the second weekend of the season. 

First Half:

The Lakers got on the scoreboard first in the game as junior forward Mattison Rayman hit a three pointer as the shot clock was at one to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead. The Arrows responded with a run of seven straight points to take a 7-3 lead over the Lakers by the 7:24 mark of the first quarter. 

Freshman guard CeCe Hacker would regain the Laker lead as she scored five straight points for the Lakers with a layup and three consecutive free throws (8-7). The game was tied at 10 at the halfway point of the first quarter but the Arrows went on a rally of six points to take a 16-10 lead. 

The Lakers netted two threes in the final 1:34 of the quarter as Hacker and Makenzie Bray each scored from beyond the arc but the Arrows would hold a six point lead following the opening 10 minutes of play (24-18). 

Ursuline scored the first eight points of the second quarter as the visiting team took a double-digit lead over the Lakers for the first time in the game. The Arrows held a 14 point lead (32-18) with 6:54 left in the first half. 

Hacker made her second three pointer of the game with 4:34 left on the clock as the freshman led the team with 11 points in the first half. With 14 seconds remaining in the first half, Margot Woughter hit a three pointer for the Lakers to close the first half scoring as the Lakers trailed 42-30 after 20 minutes of play. 

Second Half:

The Arrows maintained their lead throughout the third quarter as the team outscored the Lakers by a 21-15 margin. Woughter scored a team-leading six points in the quarter while Hacker continued her strong game for the Lakers with five points in the 10-minute stretch. The third quarter ended with the Arrows leading, 63-45. 

With just over eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Lakers cut the deficit to 14 points as Woughter and Hacker scored on back-to-back layups after Rayman forced a turnover.  Ursuline responded by going on an eight point run (73-51). 

The Lakers were unable to overcome the Arrows lead in the final minutes of play as Ursuline recorded the win by a final score of 88-62. 

Breaking Down the Game:

Hacker led the Lakers with a career-high 18 points as the first-year player went 6-for-13 in the game, which included a team-leading three three-pointers against the Arrows. Hacker made all three free throws she took in the game while also sharing the team-lead in both rebounds (6) and assists (5). 

Woughter also posted a double-digit point total against Ursuline as she totaled 14 points in the game. Woughter shared the team-lead with Hacker with five assists. 

The Lakers finished the game with a 41.1 shooting percentage, going 23-for-56 in the game. On the other end of the floor, the Arrows went 30-for-61 in the game to total a 49.2 shooting percentage. Ursuline outrebounded the Lakers in the game, 31-29. 

Up Next

The Lakers will travel to Hillsdale, Mich. to take on the Hillsdale College Chargers in the team's final nonconference game of the season on Sunday, Nov. 28. The game, which is set for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff, will be held at the Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena on the Hillsdale campus.
