HAMMOND, Ind. -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (12-11 overall, 5-7 GLIAC) swept Purdue Northwest (3-22 overall, 0-12 GLIAC) on Friday night by set scores of 25-17, 25-19 and 25-17.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors led 7-4 early in the first set after a block by
Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore). A kill from
Julia Malewicz (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies / Henry Ford II) stretched the visitor's lead 10-5. Another kill from Wagner made it 13-6 and
Olivia Fike (North Branch, Mich.) extended WSU's advantage to 20-16 with a point of her own. Kills from Wagner accounted for the final three points for Wayne State as the Green & Gold won 25-17.
Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) started the second set with three straight aces and a kill from
Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) put WSU on top 10-5.
Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) gave Wayne State a 20-16 advantage with a solo block and kills from Krenz and Fike sealed the 25-19 victory.
The third set was tied at 5-5, 6-6 and 7-7. A block from Krenz put WSU on top 11-9 and a point by VanderWal extended the visitor's advantage to 15-11. A 5-0 run by the Green & Gold pushed the margin to 22-15 and the Warriors would go on to win 25-17.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Krenz led a trio of Warriors posting at least 10 kills with 15, while Fike and Wagner both posted 10. Duffield tallied 40 assists, while Malewicz collected 18 digs.
Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) contributed 15 digs.
